I went for a long car ride today. The humies went to Victoria Park and took me for a long walk, it was quite warm and we had to stop for a drink several times. I was so tired I fell asleep on the way home.

Graduation

I was so excited tonight, it was graduation!

I unfortunately got a little too excited and embarrassed myself though. Soon it was cleaned up and I got to play.

It was great to see my puppy friends again and I had great fun running about with them. I’m no longer overly cautious with other dogs, I’m happy to meet them and enjoy their company.

The time came for our test. I had to come, sit, lie down, and stay. I performed it all wonderfully and it was all over before I knew. All the humans clapped and I felt really proud. I received my graduation certificate and a few presents.

I can highly recommend puppy school, even if only for the socialisation. There was a shaky beginning but it all worked out really well in the end. It was well worth the money $60 (AUD) and we got at least that in freebies.

Loose Leash Training

This is probably one of the most difficult things I've had to learn. You see, the world is a really exciting place for a puppy, even the most mundane objects to human eyes are of great interest to puppies. I pull on the lead a lot when there is something of interest and a park is jam packed with interest. Hell, even the front garden is packed with fun.

So, I've had to got back to basic training in the rear garden but I'm getting the hang of it and leash training involves lots of very yummy treats.

Positive Reinforcement click

Positive Reinforcement is the preferred method for training puppies, or at least that's my Mum and Dad's opinion. One of the methods of delivering this kind of training is to use clickers. A clicker is a small device that makes a click noise when you push the button. After you click you follow it up with praise or a treat.

I have recently been introduced to Clicker Training and I must say I'm very fond of it. It works very simply. When I hear a click it means that I've just done something good and a treat is on it's way.

The clicker means Mum and Dad can 'capture' my behaviours in an instant. Dad taught me to shake hands in about 10 minutes. Once I'm doing the behaviour Mum and Dad associate a word or short phrase with it. So far I know Sit, Lay down, Stay, Shake, On Your Rug and Come.

Use of this training method also means I get more treats, so I'm not complaining. You can read more about Clicker Training at Karen Pryor's site or at ClickerSolutions.

Today was my last day of semi-quarantine, my vaccines have all kicked in and I'm allowed out in public!

My first impressions, what a strange world. Strange noises, large metal things with wheels, 1000s of new smells.

We went to the park and I got to explore and have fun, although apprehensively. I have never seen stairs before and I needed to be coaxed down to the park with treats. Once down I got to play on the grass and sniff everything in sight.

On the way home I got to meet the next door neighbour and another puppy called Tiger. Tiger was much bigger and scared me a little but I'm sure we will become the best of friends.

Puppy School

Oh My God!! I was so looking forward to Puppy School but I didn’t enjoy it very much thanks to the children from hell. I’m afraid this is going to be a bit of a rant.

We arrived at the Vet and I got weighed then we moved into the training room. Here we were greeted by 5 other puppies and 3 children. The puppies were all fairly well behaved, sitting on their owners laps or by their feet, however, two of the children were hellspawn. They were running, screeching, jumping and generally making a nuisance of themselves. The mother just sat there going “Hellspawn, sit down, sit down…”. Now was this puppy school or was this kindergarten, or maybe the playground? We live in a really screwed up society when puppies are better behaved than children. If a puppy had behaved in this way we would have been severely reprimanded and put into timeout. The Hellspawn just continued to ignore it’s mother and she just continued to whine at it so things didn’t really improve much. Of course the ruckus eventually stirred the other puppies up and a din of barking ensued.

The entire session was pretty much ruined by the Hellspawn, it had to be the focus of attention. Err hello, puppies here – we are paying for this…

I spent most of the time sitting under my chair or on Mum and Dads lap. When I did get let off the lead I wasn’t really interested in the other dogs, I said hello to a few of the other humans but I was generally a little over whelmed by the ruckus. I guess it didn’t help that I’m a bit of a snob but can I help it if I expect a certain standard from people and their pets (and progeny for that matter). Truly, the other puppies were quite well behaved, if it wasn’t for the Hellspawn I think the session would have been much more successful.

We didn’t really learn much, I’ve already mastered sit and I know my name. The treats were good.

What a Week!

Wow, where to start? Life has been pretty eventful this past week.

I'll start with the discovery of a thing called a 'treat', my goodness how good these are!! We were playing in the back yard and Dad told me to 'sit', which I did. He made me sit for quite a while and then said 'Okay' and gave me the treat. I've never tasted anything so good! I must admit I got a bit too excited and may have even gone temporarily insane.

Last Thursday I was taken for a ride in the car. We went to this place called a Vet where this women I've never seen before stuck me with a sharp object and made my neck itch, Mum said it was protection against disease and I was a good girl. I did have a bit of a cry at the Vets because it was a little scary and I'd never seen the place before. I climbed up on Dad's shoulder which was comforting.

When we got home I was given a beef flavoured block which I thought was a treat, but apparently it was actually to kill worms. It must have been that red one I ate or all of those bugs have turned into worms in my tummy. Mum also put this liquid on my back and said something about fleas.

Over the weekend I got to meet all these other humans. It's was mum's birthday so they had quite a few visitors and I got to show off. Most humans are friendly and I got lots of attention and pats. There was one odd human though, he seemed to freeze up and look at me in a disapproving manner - most odd.

Dad gave me this chew thing that is sort of made out of really, really hard food. I've been chewing it for days and I've barely dented it.

Today was a fun day! Mum and Dad went out this morning so I had a sleep. When they returned they had a great surprise for me! They bought me a new toy, it's brilliant.

This photo was taken when I arrived home for the first time. I was 7 weeks old. This is my cosey bed and my first chew toy.

My new Mum and Dad set up my home in the laundry, with my water bowl and toys. It's very comfortable and gives my a lot of room to amuse myself when they are out.
